Identity as Signal: Modulated Power in Digital Futures

Utopian and dystopian futures are usually presented as opposite destinations. Yet digital futures are built on a single compatibility requirement: subjects must stay legible to coordination systems. Immersive infrastructures promise agency while also expanding the capacity to sort, rank, and steer participants. The issue is not whether technology is good or bad, but which forms of humanity remain administratively valid inside these systems.


This essay argues that future digital imaginaries reformat identity from narrative selfhood into an operational signal. Once identity is operationalized as a signal, power shifts from episodic coercion to continuous modulation of access, visibility, and probability. In these futures, the primary punishment presents itself by de-addressing rather than confinement. As a governance mechanism, de-addressing is the loss of system-level actionability: you can exist, but you cannot trigger effects. De-addressing does not require a decision. It emerges from threshold logic: a score drops below a cutoff, a flag persists long enough, a profile accumulates enough friction. No one issues a prohibition. The system simply stops returning results. The result is a recurrent tension between coordination efficiency and expressive depth. The tension comes from the fact that expressive depth lacks the infrastructure that coordination systems have.


Future imaginaries as coordination models

Freyermuth’s account traces a continuity from the Total Work of Art and Total Cinema to the paradigms of Cyberspace and the Holodeck (Freyermuth, 2024, pp. 14–15, 27). What recurs across these forms is the attempt to make experience feel more immediate, more immersive, and less mediated. That promise has a condition. As the environment becomes more expansive, it increasingly depends on shared protocols, interoperable systems, and stable identity structures. Immersion and computability grow together, and games are where this dynamic becomes especially visible.


Because digital games are participatory environments, they do not simply depict alternative futures but allow players to act within them and test their functioning (Freyermuth, 2019, pp. 50–52). In this sense, futures in games become spaces where different scenarios can be tried out and where the scope of agency, constraint, and change can be experienced more directly. They do not just represent possible orders; they let players engage with how such orders work before comparable logics appear outside the game.


Harari’s account of Dataism marks a shift in authority: decisions once tied to self-knowledge and personal judgment are increasingly treated as data-processing problems, guided by systems that claim to know people better than people know themselves (Harari, 2016, pp. 409–410). Applied to decision-making, the same logic reduces agency to cognitive overhead. If predictive systems optimize better, delegation becomes rationality. Identity, to remain operationally useful, must be compressible.


Identity loss under signal coordination

Identity loss in digital futures is often described as a moral or psychological decline. The mechanism is infrastructural. In high-frequency coordination settings, narrative depth has low operational value; it is noise that reduces efficiency and predictability. Systems require portable signs: credentials, scores, trace histories, compliance markers, and risk labels. People may retain complex inner lives, yet social operability depends on thin external interfaces. Expressive depth, the capacity to produce ambiguous, style-bearing expression that can mutate shared meaning, is precisely what this compression displaces.


Haggerty and Ericson’s “surveillant assemblage” describes how institutions abstract embodied persons into recombinable data doubles, fragments that can be extracted, recombined, and acted on independently of the person they came from (Haggerty & Ericson, 2000, pp. 610–613). Hayles approaches the same shift from the subject’s side: informational patterning becomes privileged over material instantiation, and what counts as a person increasingly depends on what can be captured, processed, and transmitted (Hayles, 1999, pp. 2–3). One tracks how institutions process bodies; the other tracks how subjects internalize that processing. Both arrive at the same point: identity is increasingly treated as signal traffic.


Digital interfaces have already parsed the encounter. Availability appears as a green dot, reliability as a streak, risk as a flag, each compressed into a readable signal. The signal arrives before the subject does. In this environment, agency delegation is a rational response. If systems ignore opacity and reward predictability, compressing oneself into stable outputs lowers friction. Decision-making becomes cognitive overhead when predictive systems are treated as superior optimizers (Harari, 2016, pp. 409–410). What gets delegated is not only labor but interpretation.


Self-expression becomes optional for the same reason. Signal coordination does not require a self with temporal continuity; it requires legibility before continuity, consistent outputs before interiority. The subject remains present, but now as a maintained interface.


Power as modulation and de-addressing

Once identity operates as a signal, power operates as its modulator. Foucault’s disciplinary framework explains how surveillance and normalization work together (Foucault, 1977, pp. 183–184); Deleuze extends this by describing control as continuous modulation rather than episodic discipline in enclosed spaces (Deleuze, 1992, pp. 3–4). In digital futures, modulation takes specific forms: recommendation hierarchies, discoverability filters, dynamic thresholds, trust scoring, and variable access friction. Zuboff shows how behavioral data is translated into prediction products and increasingly used to shape behavior (Zuboff, 2019, pp. 14–15). The core operation is adjusting option architecture: what a subject can reach, trigger, or be seen by.


Scott states why legibility-driven systems scale while producing systematic blind spots (Scott, 1998, pp. 82–83). Large institutions need simplification to coordinate populations; simplification becomes domination when the model is treated as reality. Administrative realism names this tendency: what cannot be processed within the governance interface is treated as socially negligible.


Exclusion, under this logic, changes form. A down-ranked profile, an untrusted score, a persistent risk flag; these remove a subject from effective circulation without formal prohibition. A worker keeps the same skills and portfolio; an automated trust score removes a verification badge, search placement collapses, and contracts disappear. Competence remains; actionability is withdrawn. The infrastructure processes the score rather than registering the gap between competence and score. This is de-addressing as governance. The most consequential power in these systems belongs to whoever sets the thresholds of visibility, credibility, and actionability for others. Expressive depth, the capacity to produce unmodelable variation, is what can interrupt this from the inside.


Cycle from signal compression to expressive depth

Social coordination under signal pressure produces a recognizable structure: interior richness, narrow external protocol. Institutions reward compressed, low-ambiguity outputs regardless of what lies behind them. This pressure is not stable; it generates its own counter-pressure. Under demand for speed and coordination, communication compresses into signals; under demand for meaning and conflict resolution, thicker forms of expression rebuild. Neither phase permanently defeats the other. The pressure points are visible in contemporary platforms: content moderation systems that flatten expressive range, recommendation engines that punish ambiguity, and trust scores that penalize inconsistency. These are not malfunctions. They are the infrastructure of signal preference made operational.


The cycle breaks only when one side captures infrastructure: when compression becomes mandatory across most domains, recovery survives only as private coping rather than shared culture. A utopian response, in these terms, is institutional; it preserves high-coordination signal systems while protecting zones where ambiguity, delay, and reinterpretation remain legitimate. A dystopian trajectory centralizes classification authority and treats representational infrastructures as private black boxes (Zuboff, 2019, pp. 242–252). The distinction is architectural rather than ideological. A system that centralizes classification while hiding its parameters does not need to declare what it values; it simply makes certain expressions unreachable. What disappears are the conditions under which new content can mean anything at all, rather than the content.


Conclusion

Digital futures reorganize identity before they visibly reorganize politics. As identity is reformatted into an operational signal, power shifts toward continuous modulation of visibility, access, and probability. The decisive mechanism is de-addressing.


This does not require a dark finale or a bright one. A more plausible account is cyclical. Human systems repeatedly move between compressed signaling for coordination and renewed demands for expressive depth. What makes digital futures distinctive is not the compression itself but its reach. Earlier signal regimes (bureaucratic forms, professional credentials, legal identities) covered specific domains and left others open. Digital coordination systems aspire to be comprehensive. When the same infrastructure governs work, social life, economic access, and creative visibility, the zones where expressive depth can rebuild shrink. The cycle does not stop; it becomes harder to complete. This is the condition that makes de-addressing structurally stable rather than exceptional. When the infrastructure is comprehensive, there is no outside domain where a reduced signal can recover its depth. The person remains legible to the system, just at a lower threshold of actionability. The key task for media and game studies is to design institutions where efficiency does not erase the conditions for being more than a signal.
